Festival
of Lights Review – Elder Salisbury
Elder
Salisbury reviewed the November meeting between the Washington D.C. Temple
Visitor’s Center and RCHCA, and the Festival of Lights.
Attendance, inside the Visitor’s Center was about 86,000.
This is down substantially from previous years.
In addition, the Visitor’s Center made additional changes to minimize
the impact to the neighborhood.
He
also discussed the theater construction at the Visitor’s Center and why he
believes it will not increase traffic. The
new theater with 500 seats is designed to provide a permanent location for
concerts, fireside chats and films that are currently taking place at the
center. In addition to the
construction at the Washington Temple Visitor’s Center, additional temples are
being built to serve the geographic region that is currently served by the
Washington D.C. Temple. The new
temples should result in fewer visitors to the Washington D.C. Temple.
The
community is invited to the concerts held at the Visitor’s Center.
Additional information on the concerts may be obtained from the
Visitor’s Center (301-587-0144) or via the internet at http://www.washingtonlds.org
(follow the Visitor’s Center link).

Sidewalks
– Mike Baker
Anyone
can ask the County to install sidewalks. Requests
should be made in writing to:
Sidewalks
Program
Department
of Public Works and Transportation
101
Monroe Street 9th Floor
Rockville,
MD 20850
Prior
to the County installing sidewalks on a street, every resident will be notified
and given a chance to provide input. When
sidewalks are installed, the County and State pay all costs associated with the
installation. The existence of
sidewalks has no effect on the property tax assessment.
A
request has been made for sidewalks on Stoneybrook Drive from the CSX bridge to
Beach Drive. The County engineer,
Richard Erp, hopes to solicit comments in time for the next construction period.
3.
Traffic
Concerns – Traffic on Beach Drive and Kensington Parkway has increased, due to
the closure of the Jones Mill Road Bridge.
4.
Dead Oak
Trees on Saul – There is an understanding that the County is responsible for
these trees and should be notified.
5.
Beltway
Sound Survey
A
new sound survey is expected by May 2000. There
were questions about how the monitoring will take place and the time period.
In addition, it is desired that the survey not take place during beltway
construction.
6.
Panhandling
and flower sales on Connecticut Avenue were raised as concerns.
